Creating one voice from many tongues

A little about me

Darya Chernina

“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.”

 Nelson Mandela

Born in Russia, Darya has shown passion for all things linguistic from an early age. Singing along to ABBA and Mireille Matthieu songs coming from her parents’ vinyl records, she could not have known that one day she would be able not just to understand those lyrics, but to read world’s literary masterpieces in the languages they were written and speak with ease to people on the streets of London, Paris and Barcelona . Darya began her study of foreign languages at the age of nine, right around the same time as she began writing poetry in her native Russian. Darya received her primary and secondary education in Russia and moved to the U.S. at the age of 17.

After graduating with honors from CUNY Hunter College with a degree in Romance Languages and Literatures, Darya began her carrier in finance. While working for industry leaders such as Russell Investment Group, Thomson Reuters and Lehman Brothers, Darya used her foreign language skills for research, translation and communication with clients. Darya earned an MBA in Finance in 2009.

In recent years Darya has focused her efforts in translation and localization field and language instruction. In 2012, she pioneered Russian language curriculum for New York City’s top adult language school, partnering with Russian Step by Step and received praises for her work from students’ and school’s administration. Darya has also been engaged by several U.S. – based manufacturing companies and language services providers as a “go-to” English-to-Russian translator.

An accomplished poet, Darya authored two collections of poetry which were published in Russia. Her poetry and interviews were featured in Russian newspapers, as well as in the New York-based Russian-language publication “Novoye Russkoe Slovo”.

Darya was awarded a Gold Medal for Excellence in Studies by the Russian Ministry of Education and is a recipient of Claudine Grey Prize for Excellence in Study of Foreign Languages. She is a certified ESL instructor and an active associate member of the American Translators Association.
